Vestcor Helps Provide UNB Students with Hands-On Experiential Learning

December 18, 2020

Since 1998, Vestcor has partnered with the University of New Brunswick to provide students the opportunity to gain real world quantitative investment experience through the Student Investment Fund (SIF). Using the same basic investment policies and guidelines that Vestcor follows, students have the chance to invest real funds based on their own research and analysis of the markets. The program has proven to be fruitful for the students, and for the Fund, with the original pension fund allocation of $1 million provided by Vestcor (known as the New Brunswick Investment Management Corporation at the time) growing to over $8 million.

Moving beyond theory and simulations, the SIF provides students with the opportunity to work with a professional Portfolio Manager, producing research and making portfolio recommendations. Their decisions and recommendations have real-world impacts on the fund, something that helps keeps the students focused and determined, and better preparing them for the workplace.

The program also prepares students to write the Level 1 exam for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

SIF students have seen success in a number of international competitions, and the program counts a number of successful senior investment executive among its alumni. Here at Vestcor, we have had the recent pleasure of welcoming Chantel Pearce, former president of UNB’s finance club and SIF alumna, as an Investment Associate.
